About Katsushika Hokusai
Katsushika Hokusai (c. October 31, 1760 – May 10, 1849) was a celebrated Japanese ukiyo-e artist, painter, and printmaker of the Edo period. While he is most famous for his "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" series, his artistic output was vast and varied. His work, including detailed illustrations of flora, fauna, and supernatural beings, showcased his innovative compositions and exceptional drawing skills, influencing artists across the globe.
Hokusai played a crucial role in evolving ukiyo-e from a style primarily focused on portraits of courtesans and actors to a much broader artistic scope encompassing landscapes, plants, and animals. His work profoundly influenced Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet amidst the wave of Japonism that swept across Europe in the late 19th century. With over 30,000 paintings, sketches, and prints produced over his long career, Hokusai is considered one of the greatest masters in art history.
